However, this is absolutely not the case, and multi-tasking can actually hinder your ability to achieve each task you have to the best of your ability. Whatever task you intend to perform, you should be inspired to do so efficiently so that you are proud of your results. The reason why multi-tasking doesn’t help you in this regard is that your efficiency when multi-tasking dips tremendously. The biggest reason is that you won’t be able to commit as much time to one task if you are worried about completing something else as well.
In order to be as efficient as you can in performing any task, you have to devote all your time and energy towards it until it reaches completion. If you are performing one task while simultaneously being concerned about something else, you won’t be able to perform certain functions of that task correctly.
There is also evidence to suggest that multitasking can make one more anxious to complete each task. The reason why this is the case is that your attention is divided and instead of being focused on one specific task, your mind is wandering to other areas. For example, imagine being in school and having to finish up a paper you have to write. However, at the same time, you are worried about a job-related assignment that you have to complete.
Having all of these concerns on your mind can make you more anxious, and in turn, it will make you less productive. One of the worst things that happen in this scenario is that this anxiety causes you to rush and make mistakes. You should avoid this at all costs.
The irony about multi-tasking is that it actually serves as a waste of your time. One may engage in multi-tasking in order to save time while not knowing it actually has the opposite effect. The reason why multi-tasking serves as a waste of time is that we are naturally unable to maintain flow states. This means we have to essentially reset our minds and our bodies to tackle each task given to us.
This waste of time manifests itself greatly when you are trying to juggle small tasks and large tasks at the same time. Eventually, you will see that you have more available time if you simply focus on one thing at a time.
Shortens Attention Span
Another thing to consider is that multi-tasking will greatly shorten your attention span. Studies have shown that your short term attention span can be greatly diminished. It can be very difficult to concentrate while going back and forth on various tasks, but this can cause you to forget certain things.
This isn’t surprising because your mind will be wavering all over the place. You are operating under the false illusion that you are doing more, but while you are performing multiple tasks, you will be more liable to forget certain things because your mind isn’t focused on just one thing.
You’re Not Really Multi-Tasking
Once again, multi-tasking operates under the illusion that you are actually doing more. This isn’t true because when you multi-task, you are actually making decisions on the fly as to what takes priority at the current time.
So instead of working on two things at the same time, what you are actually doing is deciding in real-time what you want to do. Doing so will result in you doing tasks poorly or not up to your standards. This adds more stress and decreases productivity.
