Do One Room at a Time
The prospect of decluttering an entire apartment feels daunting. One way to make it feel less scary is by starting small. There’s no need to tackle the entire apartment at the same time. This way, you can see results quickly.
Stick to the Basics
A great way to pare down your apartment is by sticking to the basic things you use. There’s no need to keep things around that you don’t even need. You don’t need to have six umbrellas when there’s only three of you in the apartment.
Buy Storage Bins
Great storage is an ideal way to keep everything you need and know where it is at any given time. Use them to keep items large and small on hand. Each room should have dedicated storage space. For example, the storage space devoted to each kind of silverware makes it easy to know exactly how many knives and forks you have on hand and if you need to buy more.
Make a Budget
Reducing clutter is easy when you create a budget. This way, you’re not tempted to stray from it. You can tell yourself that you don’t need it and it isn’t part of your planned expenses.
Hold an Apartment Sale
Getting rid of things you have on hand ca be done by holding an apartment sale. This is an excellent opportunity to get rid of the things you don’t need and make some cash at the same time. Make sure each item is priced to move and you’ll declutter in no time.
Remove it If You haven’t Worn It
If you haven’t worn it in a year, now is the time to get rid of it for good. That dress that isn’t quite the right size does not deserve a place in your closet. The same is true of the hats, gloves and scarves that you’re not using and not going to use.
Donate it to Charity
Lots of places are very happy to have the things you do not need. You can also take a tax deduction and feel good about yourself for the donation. Before you donate it to charity, look over any item carefully. Charities want things in good condition that they know will sell. A sweater should be free of holes. Scarves should not have missing threads. The same is true of other items that you’re going to donate. Carefully clean any linens. If something isn’t in good condition, you may to throw it out instead.
Use Your Library
Libraries are great public resource. This is where to go to find the latest books as well as old favorites. Use your library as a source of information and entertainment. You can head here and ask for the latest best sellers. Many librarians are also happy to help out clients with special requests. If you don’t see a specific book you want, you can always ask for it via inter-library loan. When you take items out, you then return them a short time later. This is one way to reduce the number of CD’s and your home and still have great entertainment options.
Ask For Worthy Cause Presents
Christmas, birthdays and other gift giving occasions are a lot of fun. At the same time, they can mean items you don’t need or want. It’s possible to reduce gift giving to a few basic items such as one special gift for each person. Then consider exploring other ways of giving a meaningful gift that will not add to the clutter in your apartment. For example, you can ask for donations to your favorite local charity. A donation made in your name makes you feel great. Perishable items like food are also ideal as they can be eaten and not create clutter.
